La Familia: Raising Chicanx Families

In this community workshop/platica we will discuss both the strengths of a family-centered culture as well as past and current family wounds. In this individualistic society, the interconnectedness of Chicanx families is often devalued and mischaracterized. Valuing cultural traditions in our families can be a source of strength, pride, and also conflict. We will discuss how to heal some of these wounds while also finding ways to honor our passed down cultural strengths of familismo. Healthy interdependence is a cultural strength we need to build on and is one piece of our liberation & healing!

We will cover:

Intergenerational Wisdom

Intergenerational & Historical Trauma

Untangling cultural assets of familismo from unhealthy patterns

Re-storying family stories toward healing utilizing a positive cultural framework

Locate the social/community pressures on families
